Email 31: April Fool

Written by Charles Boling - - no comments

Friday was April Fool's Day. I got up a few minutes early, and waited for President Ross to come in. Normally, he comes in at 6 am, sings to us to wake us up, then we go on a short walk with him. This time, in observation of the holiday, I screamed to scare him when he came in. The result was far better than I imagined. He screamed and jumped, then we were hanging onto each other, trying not to fall over from laughing so hard.

Some more:

Saturday was General Conference. For the first session, we went over to the Fawcett's house for brunch before the first session (it's strange having it start at 11 am). We had Belgian Waffles. Sister Fawcett said that no Elder had eaten more than three. So of course, my inner self said "Well, you are going to see an Elder eat more than three". I ate four. With the fruit, the sausages, more fruit, and the syrup, I was quite very so much definitely full. Anyway, conference was good. Afterwards, we talked for a long time about agency, sin, premortal, mortal, and postmortal life, progression after death, and such. When we finished, it was about 15 minutes before the next session staretd. Wee went home, and watched it in the Ross's TV room. That session was also good.

The part we were waiting for:

- Missoula Montana is getting a temple!!!!! Do you know how excited I am for that?!?!?!?

Yes we do; during the session, Michele said: "I bet Matthew is grinning from ear to ear and his companion has NO idea why!"

He closed his letter w/ a hard-working home-schooled kid's dilemma:

Public school kids are hooked on when someone graduated. Here is a typical conversation (insert appropriate hand gestures and facial expressions as neccessary):
Them: When did you graduate?
Me: I was homeschooled. [In my mind, that is enough of an answer; homeschooling doesn't involve graduation]
Them: No, I mean when did you graduate?
Me: Uh, I was homeschooled.
Them: Oh, so when did you graduate from homeschool? [maybe it takes twice for someone to hear the word "homeschool"?]
Me: I... didn't.
Them: How did you not graduate?!?
Me: Graduating wasn't part of homeschooling. I was homeschooled until I was 16, then took two years of college.
Them [after being wowed that I took that much college before I was 18]: Oh, but you had to graduate before you attended college, right?
Me: No. [Often slightly frustrated at this point]
Them: But you got your High School diploma, right?
Me: No, I didn't.
Them: What cirriculum did you use?
Me: We didn't use one.
Them [baffled]: So... you didn't graduate, you didn't get your diploma, you didn't use a cirriculum, but you attended two years of college?
Me [very relieved that they are finally following]: Yes.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to answer the question "When did you graduate?" to a public schooler's mind who is so much "in the box" that they don't even realize that there is a box?
